We have a date!

Just a quick update to let everyone know of the date of the big swim! August 11 and if by chance it rains August 12th. Ric choose August 11th because Rickie's birthday is August 10th and he thought that would be appropriate.

More information coming soon!

I'll be filling in for Carrie as she is totally busy with a lot of exciting things.

Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States.

Cf causes the body to produce an abnormally thick, sticky mucus, due to the faulty transport of sodium and chloride (salt) within cells lining organs such as the lungs and pancreas, to their outer surfaces. This abnormal mucus clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections.

Approximately one in 3,900 children in the United States each year is born with CF. It is found in all racial and ethnic groups; however, it is more common among Caucasians. There are about 1,000 new cases of CF diagnosed each year. Most individuals are diagnosed by the age of three; but nearly 10 percent of all newly diagnosed cases are age 18 or older.

One in 31 Americans (one in 28 Caucasians) --more than 10 million people--is an unknowing, symptom-less carrier of one copy of the defective CF gene.

An individual must inherit two defective copies of the CF gene--one from each parent--to have cystic fibrosis. There is a 25 percent chance that the child will have CF; a 50 percent chance that the child will be a carrier; and a 25 percent chance that the child will be a non-carrier.
